Trumpocracy: The Corruption of the American Republic by David Frum

David Frum’s Trumpocracy: The Corruption of the American Republic should be mandatory reading for every voting American, particularly anyone who did or would even consider voting for Donald Trump. Frum is intelligent, rational, thorough, and clear-headed. This is not the crazed manifesto of a dogmatic liberal. It is an impassioned but excruciatingly well-documented indictment of Trumpism and its supporters written by a thoughtful and pragmatic conservative.

Frum is not dismissive of Trump’s voters. He acknowledges why people voted for Trump, and offers a more cogent explanation for their motives than almost any of Trump’s supporters can.

But he is most effective when articulating why Trump is such a threat- not only to the country as a whole- but especially to the conservative values many of his supporters proclaim to uphold.

His optimistic concluding remarks fail to inspire much confidence after the overwhelming case he presents throughout the book against Trump and the country that elected him. I wish I shared his hope in the future.

This, however, does not detract from his virtually air-tight case against Trump and Trumpism. If you’re a conservative and want to understand why you should be more appalled by Trump than you are by the liberals and than the liberals are by Trump, David Frum’s Trumpocracy should be the next book you read.
